Effective Ways to Reduce Patient Wait Times in a Small Clinic Setting

Small Clinic Setting | ProductiveandFree

A small clinic doesn’t have the same manpower as a larger hospital. It doesn’t have the same kind of funding that means waiting rooms can be outfitted with all the latest modcons. And because of these factors, it’s often that smaller clinics in local areas have to deal with longer, more frustrating patient wait times.

However, there are ways to bring the average wait time back down and let your patients feel just as cared for when they’re outside of the treatment room. As such, here are a few effective methods you can put to use within your own small clinical setting.

Double Book Appointment Slots

This is a common way for healthcare businesses to keep patients coming in and out the door in a streamlined queue. It also makes sure that if there are any delays, other patients are less likely to miss out.

After all, it’s very common for patients to arrive a few minutes early, as well as a few minutes late. And if that’s the case, you can see one patient the moment they arrive and still have time to get to the later patient without them having to wait too long either.

For example, if you book two patients in for a 9.45am appointment, one could check in at 9.38am and be seen straight in, whereas the second arrives at 9.46am and only has to wait 2 to 3 more minutes until they are seen.

Handle Paperwork Later

You don’t want to hold up any urgent cases by having to fill out all the red tape while they’re waiting on treatment.

You want to be able to get them into the treatment room to see the doctor, administer any tests or investigations within the same hour, and have them out the door and on their way home with the right medication and/or ongoing treatment plan.

If you handle emergencies within your clinic, it’s common for patients to have to wait around for twice as long to allow all the necessary documents to be submitted. And while you can’t hurry test results, you can form a better Accident Claim Management strategy that puts the patient first and the evidence collection secondary.

Allow for Early and Late Appointment Times

Not only does this allow patients to book times that are much more convenient for them - which reduces the amount of ‘no-shows’ you’re likely to see - but it also frees up more time in the day for appointments to happen overall.

Instead of everyone wanting to be booked in for the same hour period between 9 and 10 in the morning, you can let early birds come in at 8.30am, and those who can only make it after work can come in for a 6pm appointment.

If you want to reduce patient wait times within your clinic, use the methods above to free up appointment space, keep patients coming in and out, and handle any necessary paperwork later on.
